A Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) is an electronic monitoring system in which a person carries a device that he or she can use to signal a central dispatcher in the event of a fall or the need for help. Emergency assistance is summoned if the person does not answer the telephone. When emergency help (medical, fire, or police) is needed, the BPERS user presses the transmitter's help button. It sends a radio signal to the console. The console automatically dials one or more pre-selected emergency telephone numbers. BPERS are programmed to telephone an Emergency Response Center where the caller is identified. Center staff will notify medical, fire, or police and will check to see if there is a call list that should be notified.
